This report summarises current national and international approaches to
the investigation, assessment and remediation of contaminated sites.
The report gives a background on contaminated land, talking about types
of hazards and risks, concentration of contaminants, nature and forms of
contaminants, and contaminants and industry. Techniques for
investigating sites are set out and the procedure for interpretation and
assessment of data is described. Contaminated site remediation is
talked about, including public protection measures, containment, thermal
treatment, chemical and physical extraction and biological treatment of
contaminated soils. Groundwater treatment processes are also
discussed.
